CONSORTIA

The ADLP Center works with a number of partners in its efforts to build national capacity at native-like levels of foreign language proficiency. These are described below. Such partnerships are in their initial phases, and we anticipate growth and refinement over time.

Intrauniversity Consortium

Institute for International Security and Conflict Resolution (IISCOR). IISCOR focuses on various key language and national emphases including Latin America, China, Russia, and the Near and Middle East. IISCOR encourages and facilitates teaching and research in the multidisciplinary area of international security and conflict resolution. San Diego State University offers an ISCOR major. Language study and study abroad are incorporated into this major. IISCOR students work together with SDSU bilateral agreements in collaboration with more than one hundred universities throughout the world.

Center for Latin American Studies. Latin American studies at SDSU is an interdisciplinary program, with course offerings drawing on many different disciplines to give a more encompassing view of what is considered Latin America. Eighty-seven associated faculty members offer non-language courses at the upper division and graduate level in Anthropology, Art, Chicano/a Studies, Economics, English, Geography, History, Latin American Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Television, Film and New Media, Women’s Studies.

China Institute. The China Institute at SDSU fosters the understanding of greater China and the Chinese diaspora in all its manifestations—cultural, linguistic, political, economic, scientific, and interpersonal, teaching such courses as Intercultural Communication in China (a 3-week course conducted in Chinese at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, not unlike those planned for the ADLP Center). Key regions of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are the focus of such courses. The institute seeks to provide scholarship support and funding, to facilitate exchange and research programs, and to create opportunities for internships in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other Chinese-speaking areas

CIBER, Center for International Business Education and Research. CIBER provides a model for excellence in the development of ventures across departments; links across Higher Education, Federal Government, Corporations, and Public Organizations; international partnerships; cooperation between the university and corporations; intensive study and internship abroad programs for advanced language students; as well as distance learning and innovative use of the Internet to facilitate learning. Its activities include a variety of novel activities that impact interdisciplinary education in the United States and further the CIBER mandate to enhance U.S. competitiveness abroad, in offering business, finance, management, communications systems, and other professional training for foreign language and international studies faculty and students. CIBER oversees the International Business Exchange and Multiple-Degree Program (IBEMP) and provides a model for other programs in specific content areas. IBEMP enables students to acquire cross-cultural experience and advanced language competency, while attending partner universities abroad. SDSU hosts the only triple-degree program in the United States with universities in the NAFTA nations of Canada, and Mexico. In addition, the IBEMP offers study abroad exchange programs at universities in key NSEP language, regional and national areas: China, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, and Ecuador.

Taiwan MSBA. International Business is one of the most popular academic specializations on the main campus. In addition, SDSU also delivers a graduate business degree program overseas. SDSU offers 2 different areas of specialization in the Taiwan MSBA: International Business and Entrepreneurship. The program is conducted by full-time San Diego State University faculty who travel to Taipei to deliver courses. The full program takes 18 months to complete. This program can serve as a partner-program with the ADLP Center for delivering such courses in Chinese, which avail of the likes of native business people.
